The Streaming Student Program was introduced in the school year 2024-2025 when schools were asked to select a Grade 10 student, or a Grade 9 student if that student attended that school for at least one year. The one-year period is to ensure that the school knows the student well enough to confirm he or she meets the selection criteria (hard-working and living in difficult financial circumstances). 

 

Streaming students are expected to remain as HOST recipients until graduation as long as they continue to meet the criteria. This initiative was introduced to strike a balance between HOST’s desire to support students through to graduation and school’s desire to provide support to other students in need.  

 

If the student is no longer qualified for the award, the school must let us know, then select a new streaming student. A streaming student cannot be bumped by another student if the streamer continues to meet the selection criteria. However; a streamer may be removed from the program for reasons such as poor attendance, no longer in financial difficulties or has moved. It is sufficient that the school tells us that a streaming student no longer meets the selection criteria. No other details are required. They may choose a replacement student who is already in the HOST Program or a new recipient. For example, the school may elect a current recipient who is in grade 10.

 

There is only one streaming student per school, with the exception of a streaming student who has transferred to a school that already has a streaming student.

 

A new streaming student is not selected each year. A new streaming student is selected when the current streaming student graduates or if the student no longer meets the selection criteria.

 

Alternate schools are not required to have a Steaming Student. Students who attend alternate schools face more challenging circumstances than other students and it is more difficult for alternate schools to select a student who may or may not stay with them until graduation.
