“Throughout high school, I had to sacrifice a large portion of my time to pick up a part-time job so my family could stay afloat. I would choose work over school because it was a matter of not only comfort but survival. It was difficult being 15 and putting off assignments and handing them in late just so I could make extra money. I often prayed for the ability to rest instead of worrying about how my brother would be fed, how we’d be able to do schoolwork if we didn’t have WIFI, how my family would get anywhere without a Presto Pass. It always seemed like we were short something. The morning that I found out about being in the program, I almost didn’t come to school as I had a shift that ended at 11pm the night before and had to stay up to finish some assignments. Hearing the news of being a part of the HOST program provided me with the greatest relief I’ve ever felt in my teenage years. I was never someone who asked for help, so being given the help I needed, no questions asked, was one of the greatest feelings. The appreciation I have for those at the HOST program is beyond describable. Thank you for being a source of stability for so many students like me.”

“The money I have received has helped both me and my family on multiple occasions. I was able to buy myself winter boots, so I did not have to wear running shoes all winter because my family did not have enough room in their pay cheques. The money also helped me buy things when I was out with friends, so I did not feel embarrassed that my family could not give me any money. With the money I was also able to give my parents some when they needed help to make ends meet and pay bills. Most importantly it helped me buy lunch at school on many occasions so I did not starve. Lastly I would like to thank the President of HOST for creating the program, but also the people and families who give money to the program because without them I would not have been able to do some of the things I have done. This program has helped me realize that there are people out there that realize some families are struggling financially and are willing to help them out.”

“Your monthly $100 has helped me in many ways. Before I got your money, I was very unmotivated to go to school because I was always sad and hungry and just upset with the way my life was going for the past two years . Your money helped me put clean clothes on my body, helped me put the food on the table. And helped me get from place to place. Your money made it easier for me to come to school and actually get work done; before all the help I was stressed and insecure about never having anything. I was able to help my mom, friends and some family over time and I really wish there was a way I could repay you for all your help. I don’t know where I would be without you.”

“Between struggling to keep my grades up in school and my stressful life outside of school, I had lost pretty much all motivation to do well, to try. When I was called down to the office, being introduced to the HOST program was the last thing I expected. When I was told about the program and informed that I had been chosen, I just cried and cried for a while. To think about all the other students that deserved this money, but to know that I had been chosen made me truly grateful. It made me feel like there were other people that cared about me and believed in me which made all the difference. They believed that I had the potential to succeed and the HOST program recognized that I just needed a little push in the right direction. This in turn, helped me believe in myself. This pushed me to study even harder and I am very happy to have been chosen. Thank you for making the HOST Program possible, I will be forever thankful for this opportunity.”

“With my award money, I bought gifts for a special celebration for my family and I spent a good amount on eating lunch rather than not eating. And buying coffee, which helped a lot with my school work. My family does not have a car, and it felt really good that I could pick up things for my mother when she needed them using the money. I went on a grocery haul for my family and realized the importance of budgeting and learned more about cooking. I used a small amount of money for things I didn't have the money for before, like makeup, new clothes and cosmetic services. This made me so confident in my everyday life and a lot more willing to participate in social settings. It felt good when I could take my siblings out and feed them and spend more time with them. As well as go out with friends here and there and afford my own food independently. It felt good not worrying about needing a big job and focusing on school and on my mental health. I set aside some of the money for my bigger goals, and learn how not to lose my money on un-essential things. When I heard I was selected for the HOST program award, I felt like I mattered for something, as at that time my family was in crisis and I was having extreme mental issues. Having the money, I bought books to read although I didn't really read before.“

“The HOST program is absolutely amazing. It made me realize that if I work hard enough, I will be recognized. As a student who thinks pretty low of himself, I must say it made me feel important. It made me feel recognized. It helped me out a lot during this school year. I was able to do a bit of groceries, I was able to buy my friends birthday gifts for the first time ever. I was able to go to the store and get myself a treat whenever I wanted to. I was able to buy clothing, I felt good about myself. And most importantly, it reminded me that I was worth it. It reminds me not to give up. I am so thankful for the HOST program because if I wasn't shown that someone realized how hard I was working, I probably would've given up. But I didn't and I’m proud of myself. Whoever created or takes part in the HOST program deserves to know that their effort in helping students has a huge impact on my life.“

“I am writing to you to inform you on my experience with your HOST program. When I first got introduced to this program, I was very shocked and confused on why you guys first chose me. I was depressed and having financial and emotional issues at home. The award I received each month not only helped to pay for tutoring, money so I wouldn't starve each day, and money for clothes, and to be able to buy materials for certain projects. My marks began to improve and I didn't feel so imprisoned anymore. I didn't have my parents yelling at me about how I’m such a financial burden to them. A lot of the stresses that I went through subsided and I could breathe again. Thank you for making me feel like I was normal girl for the first time.”

“I am writing to talk about how the Help Our Students Program has made a positive impact in my life, at home and at school. I’ve been blessed to be able to use this money for small things like groceries for the house and big things like a new winter coat for my sister. My parents always wanted their kids to get the best education but it can be hard going to school in higher-class neighborhoods when our family didn’t have as much as others. Being able to get new clothes for my sister was a good feeling. We could both go to school without having to worry about what we were wearing or lunch and we could focus more on school. The award made it possible for me to take a load off of my parents by helping pay for groceries and other small house needs. The award even made it possible for me to buy a uniform to start a part-time job. In all this award has been an amazing help to my family and me so far this year, and I am so grateful for this opportunity that the HOST program has given me.”
———
I want to take this opportunity to thank you so much for selecting me for this award. It means more to me than you’ll ever know. I am writing this letter to thank you for supporting me through the host program. I was able to achieve doing groceries and taking a step further out of debt with the help of your funds given and being said has also helped me focus on school work and getting a job while still having money to support any daily needs. Thanks again for supporting me through the darker times. And I'd like to say thank you for a unique opportunity that you've given me. You have no idea how much this means to me; to be honest, words can neither qualify nor quantify how important this is to me. It encourages me, motivates me and just shows me the bright side for whenever I get weakened up, I can get up and work two times harder to achieve my goals. Financially, I am pretty relieved because of you guys now, I only work two days a week, thus, I have more time to focus on my school work. I really appreciate and value this gift of yours. Thank you! This will help my family a lot.

“Financially, things have been very difficult for my mother, as a single parent. She has to support my brother and me, paying bills, buying clothing, groceries and certainly covering many more things that I am not even aware of. However, with this money I have been able to pay for my own things and release some stress off of my mom. I am so thankful that I was given this chance and opportunity to grow and flourish into the bright, cheerful and optimistic girl I am today. I am only able to be so bright because I do not have the weight and darkness of financial instability holding me down like before I came across the HOST Program.”

“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for your generosity in providing this award. I am currently in grade 12 and I am graduating in June next year. As a student whose family has been undergoing financial difficulty, with this program, my family and I have been able to have enough to eat. Of the $100 that I receive from the HOST Program, I have used some of it for food at home which helped me a lot in my academics because I did not have to worry about what my siblings will have to take for lunch at school or eat at home since neither of my parents had jobs. It also helped me to continue saving for my education after I graduate since I did not have to use the little that I get from my recent job to give it to my parents. I was also able to use this money to pay for important field trips at school and for sports tournaments, because I love sports, mostly rugby. This money has not only been a great help to me but also for my parents and many siblings. Since I started receiving this money I have been able to carry a lunch pack for myself because I know that my young brothers and sisters at least have enough to eat. I remember once I had borrowed $150 from a friend because that day we had nothing to eat. This might seem too much but for a large family this was only enough for a week. As soon as I had my first deposit from the HOST Program, I used it to pay back the debt because it is not good to stay in debt because it does not allow you to move forward and all the thanks go to HOST Program for this opportunity. This money offered to many students like me assists us in pursuing our career goals and helps us feel that there are people out there who think and care about us besides our families. This pushes me to study even harder so that I can be able to do the same thing for other students in the future. I am glad that I was chosen as the lucky student. Thank you for making the HOST Program possible, I will never forget the generosity extended to me!”

“I cannot begin to tell you how much my daughter and I appreciate your gift. xxx has always been a child who lacked confidence in herself. Since receiving this award, she feels that she can do just about anything now when it comes to school. She always felt like her peers were better than her but she walks with her head held high these days.

Financially, I've been struggling for the past 5 years. I am a single mother to my amazing children. Unfortunately, I am also a victim of domestic abuse. Due to this unfortunate series of events, my children have gone without several times. This affected their schooling.

We have been without food a lot during the past five years. The children wouldn't go to school because I couldn't provide them with a lunch. Then I fled my abusive relationship, causing us to become homeless. At the time, I was on stress leave from work, which is unfortunately my present state. The motel we lived in was far away from their school so the children once again couldn't go to school if there was no gas in my van. All of these issues, including so many more, have been the root of a huge cycle causing my children to miss out on an education.

We just moved to Ottawa from being homeless. Anna couldn't wait to start school. xxx has fit in beautifully, meeting many wonderful new friends. Her marks are soaring for the very first time. To her, getting this award has given her the light at the end of the tunnel that she needed in a journey of chaos and sadness that we've traveled.
xxx is the eldest of her siblings. She never asks for anything. I'm so proud of her and can't thank you enough for what you have given her. It's hope! You are what my children and I call, an "angel in disguise". In this world there are too many negatives. One positive can make the world of difference to one person. You did that for my daughter - gave her hope and a reason to keep up the high marks. With that, the possibilities for her future are endless.

With that money, she knows she will never miss school due to hunger or lack of transportation funds. She may get herself some winter boots and a new winter jacket for the walks to school in the morning. It's all in aid of her getting an education. She wants to change the world by giving hope to those less fortunate like us. I can only hope that one day, we can do the same for another as you have done for us.”

"I don't even know how to describe this feeling of gratefulness, it is something that I will never forget and that I will be forever grateful for. I have never in my whole life had the feeling of financial security that I have, that in case my mom gets kicked out I can help pay for a hotel room, or that I can be there to support my family and friends. Growing up I was always the kid with no money to go on the field trips, or the grad trips, or being able to afford food or other things, and I know how upsetting it is, to grow up poor, to grow up having to worry about whether or not there will be food on the table it is stressful. This financial aid created a security blanket for me knowing that if I ever needed anything dire I would have some money as backup or my family would. So thank you for everything."

"I wanted to write to you to express my deep gratitude for granting me this scholarship. I would also like to thank you for your trust in me. It is thanks to your encouragement that I was able to achieve my personal goals and needs. Firstly, thanks to this award, I was able to manage my health because I had the means to buy my medicines. Second, this award helped me feed myself by buying groceries every month. Finally, this award saved the life of my mother in Haiti because she was sick and it was thanks to this money that I was able to transfer money for hospital expenses. Your support really has a positive impact on me, once again thank you so much for this scholarship.”

"The money I’ve received from the HOST program has granted me something I’ve never had in the many years I’ve grown up in poverty, a sense of security. There are no words to describe how grateful I am for it, it’s the kind of thing you may never truly understand unless you experience it. For so long I had been paralyzed with a feeling of complete helplessness as I was too young to help my mom financially and doing anything else felt pointless. HOST gave me some hope, that I could stay focused on my schoolwork and that the house of cards I had been standing on wouldn’t collapse just yet. With the money from the HOST program, I could pay our internet bill for the month and save a little bit so that if my computer broke or there was another emergency we would be able to survive it. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who donates to the HOST program, and everyone involved with running it. I hope that one day I may be in a secure enough spot that I can donate twice as much as I’ve received.”

"To be honest, this has helped me and my family stay alive. Last week, when I went grocery shopping, I didn't have enough money in my account. Then I realized the HOST money had come in, and I was able to buy the groceries. This is my second year getting the money from you, and it really helps me and my family. I am working two jobs and going to school, and this lets me have some time for school, not just working."

"This Program’s support has really made a huge impact on my life. For ten months, I was given $160 and it helped me and my family a lot. Whenever I had a school trip or excursion, I loved the fact that I didn’t have to ask my mum for help and I could just do it myself. I was also able to provide myself a Chromebook for school and buy school supplies like my art materials, calculators and many more for me and my siblings. This support has really made me confident, taught me how to manage and save money, gave me a sense of responsibility and made me feel so proud that I could provide for myself as a student whilst seeking a job. I’ve learnt how important it is to have the various recourses that provided by this program. I will always be grateful for what it gave; not just the money but the feeling that I was seen and cared for by the Help Our Students program.”

"What you have all done for me has truly transformed my grade 12 experience. With the monthly funds granted to me, I have been able to afford a sit-stand desk to aid with the long hours spent in my virtual classes, buy myself a legitimate pair of eyeglasses and support my mom with our living expenses. Before being accepted into the HOST program, I spend 30+ hours weekly at my job trying to save money as well as balancing my academics. I was overwhelmed. Now, I'm able to fully focus on my academics on an even playing field as students who don't need to preoccupy themselves with sometimes paying rent, food or utilities. I will forever be grateful for granting me this opportunity to unleash my full academic potential. Many thanks."

"The money from the HOST Program has helped me a lot by helping me support my family when we are low on food. It also helped me pay for food when I was hungry and drinks when I was thirsty. Also it helped me pay for stuff I didn't have enough money for. An example is how I got new shoes since my old pair was ripped. And I got some new clothes since I was low on clothes. It also helped me help my friends to pay for the bus and sometimes if they were hungry I would buy them food since they would always buy me food when I didn't have money. I also bought stuff that I needed for my day to day life like deodorant, hair products, Cologne. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Richard you generally helped me out.”

"Thank those who participated in this award. It was such a great thing that happened to me. It encourages me to do more and to work hard as much as I can. When I think that someone cares about my performance and my success, I am more motivated to be the best not only the better person myself. I am grateful for this opportunity. It helped me mentally and financially especially since I have supported my family financially since my dad died when I was a child. I went through a lot of challenges, but once I remember that someone would support me, I feel more confident to keep going and grow more. It is not only about financial needs it is also about mental needs, especially with the pressure and big responsibilities in my life. I still remember the moment when I was informed that I was one of the select people for this award. It makes an impact and makes a big difference in my case and my feelings. In addition to that, it reminds me that there are still good things and good people in this world. Finally, I am so thankful for everything."

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to each of you who made this award possible. Your belief in me and willingness to extend a helping hand during my time of need has left an indelible mark on my heart. You've shown me the true meaning of compassion and community, and for that, I will be forever grateful. When I learned that I was receiving this award, I was overwhelmed with gratitude and relief and I couldn’t stop crying. During that time, my family was facing some of the toughest financial challenges we had ever encountered. Both my parents were struggling to find work due to the language barrier. To add to our difficulties, my father fell ill and required surgery, leaving him unable to work. With my mother still learning English and unable to find work, the financial strain on our family became almost unbearable. As a high school student in my final year, I found myself taking on responsibilities far beyond what I had ever imagined. I worked tirelessly, balancing two jobs alongside my studies, all while trying to support my family emotionally through this trying time. The weight of our financial struggles was heavy, and there were moments when it felt like we might not make it through as we were sometimes unable to have food. But the impact of your kindness extended far beyond our immediate needs. With the financial burden eased, I was able to focus more on school, knowing I have a community that supports and believes in me. With time, my dad was able to find work. I was able to save some money from the award to buy a school laptop for next year. This all wouldn't have been possible without your help and it has helped me understand the importance of giving back to the community, which I will do when I can. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for giving my family and me hope when we needed it most. With warmest regards."

"I wanted to write this letter regarding my experience with the bursary program! The bursary has helped me tremendously with my budgeting and an extra means of income every month. As a young girl living alone, that extra boost of income really inspires me and gives me motivation to keep going. It’s hard sometimes living alone, sometimes I feel like an outsider being around people my own age since their lives can be so different from mine. I work and support myself through school every day, and this year is hopefully my last in high school. I have done my best this year to push through almost 10+ credits that I was missing to graduate. Every time I got that monthly income, it felt like I was being rewarded for all my sleepless nights, exhaustion, and frustration. I truly appreciate all the help I’ve received from this program! Thank you so much."

"I would like to start this short letter by first thanking Richard Lussier, the HOST program, and all the staff that has awarded me this scholarship. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to Richard Lussier and the HOST program for supporting me and others like me who are in need of financial assistance. I would like to give a brief introduction about myself. My name is XXXX and I’m 18 years old. I've come a long way to be where I am right now. I’m a newcomer to Canada who missed a couple of years of education in elementary school due to an unsafe environment. When I came to Canada, I was in grade 7, and since then, I’ve been constantly trying my best to learn the language and meet the standards that a grade 7 student needs to know. I've been trying to do that by doing summer school every year and attending a lot of community centers that help students. To this day, I’m working hard to not let anything interfere with or set a barrier between me and my dreams. This year, I could say has been one of the hardest years of my life, and one of the reasons why is due to the COVID pandemic, which has affected not only me but many others and affected my learning in and outside of school since many community centers were closed. So starting this year with all the struggles in school, I have a baby sister that got pretty sick, and she and my mom stayed at the hospital for a while. During that time, I was not able to work because I’m the oldest daughter at home and I have little siblings to take care of while my mom is at the hospital. This situation affected me mentally because I was having a hard time at school, not being able to work so I could get a tutor, and my family's situation just made me feel even worse. But when I started receiving this gift of $150 monthly, I was and am still so thankful and grateful for this gift, even if it doesn't seem like a lot to some. With this money, I was able to request a tutor that would help me with lessons like physics and calculus, which I was struggling with the most. Thankfully, things at school started to make sense, and slowly I was able to do lessons on my own. During that time, my sister started feeling better, and she and my mom were able to come back home, which gave me more time to focus on my schoolwork. Now, with great pride, I can say, "I did it!" I have been accepted into the health science program at Ottawa University and the computer engineering program at Carleton University. This upcoming fall I will be attending Carleton University to pursue my studies in computer engineering. None of these achievements would have been possible without the indispensable support of the HOST program. Once again, I express my deepest gratitude to you, Mr. Lussier, and the entire HOST program for believing in me and providing the means for me to overcome financial obstacles. Your generosity has made a lasting impact on my life, and I am committed to seizing this opportunity to fulfill my potential and make a positive contribution to society. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

"Dear Host program I wanted to share a few ways that this program has helped, charged my life for the best and made my life easier. The Host program has helped me in so many ways some examples being with weekly groceries which was something that I struggled with but was too embarrassed to ask for help. My second being getting my wisdom tooth removed. I didn’t realize how expensive it was but I’m glad the host program was able to cover somewhat of the expense. My last example is just being able to buy small things that make my day better and a little more fun. All in all I just want to say thank you so much for selecting to help me. I can’t thank you enough.”

"Having a beautiful smile can boost your self-esteem and your physical and emotional health. Despite all the positive benefits of having a beautiful smile, not all people can afford the luxury of braces. Prior to this year, I was included in this group of less fortunate people. However, this year my luck changed when I was chosen as a candidate for the HOST program and I was given $1,000 over the course of the school year. This money helped me change my smile by helping me supplement the cost of orthodontics. As an ELL student, learning English, my misaligned teeth affected the pronunciation of my words. My new braces are straightening my teeth and making me more confident in my communication with my teachers, new friends, and community members. This wonderful opportunity, the HOST program, allows me to experience a tremendous change not only in myself but in my life as a whole. It has given me more self-confidence and new hope for a better future. I am very thankful for this program that gives opportunities and perks for underprivileged students to stay in school and graduate with a high school diploma. In fact, the program founder, Richard, encourages hardworking students to realize their dreams despite poverty. Once again, I am very thankful for being chosen for the HOST program. It was an unexpected opportunity that has given me so much confidence. I would like to say a word of thanks to everyone who contributed to this assistance, which raised my morale even more to study."

"The Host Program award was an encouragement to me. It showed me that I can do anything and be anything as long as I commit to it. My family's financial state is not so good. I have been missing school activities and going out with my friends because I was ashamed I could not afford them. This award helped me participate in school activities and hang out with friends. I used to look shabby and embarrassed because I could not afford clothes, this award helped me start looking clean and smart. I bought clothes and bought food for our home. I started helping with grocery shopping at home. This award helped me be more determined to reach my grade goals. I was able to focus at school and increase my grades. I was always underestimated and I thought I would never achieve any award in my high school. This award changed my perspective and my way of thinking. This award has also inspired me to help other people who are going through difficult times. This award boosted my confidence in doing psychology with the sole aim of helping people out there who are going through difficult times with no strings attached. This award has given me the desire to work in Non-government organizations with the aim of changing people's perspectives about themselves and making a difference in their lives. Thank you so much Mr. President for helping me and being a hero to me. I will always remember this award throughout my lifetime. I am so grateful for taking this approach and thinking about people like me. This award helped me materially and immaterially. I will forever be grateful to you. With ink and a blank document, I cannot fully write down every impact of this award on me because the paper document cannot contain every single word of appreciation that I have for your Program, Sir. However, I am grateful to the President for starting this program and help hundreds of people like me. May God richly bless you and all the works of your hands. May you be a blessing to many other kids out there who are going through difficult times and think that they can never achieve anything.”

"First of all I would like to thank the HOST program for allowing me to be a participant. Leaving home at a young age with no financial support from parental/guardian figures made it difficult for me to pursue secondary schooling. This program has allowed me to have financial backing and gives me an opportunity to further my education. Secondly, I’d like to point out that this program has given me a chance to go after a career in horticulture. Without this program I wouldn’t have felt comfortable accepting my admission to the course. The funds available allowed me to follow my dream by purchasing work clothes and supplies to give me a chance to make more money leading up to this fall. I also feel confident that I own my own tools required to succeed in this field. Thank you for this opportunity and this chance. I’m extremely grateful."

"First of all I'd like to say thank you, I am very blessed and lucky to have been chosen for this program which I am extremely thankful for. This has been a very eventful year for me and I've had to overcome a whole lot of roadblocks and obstacles that a regular 16 year old wouldn’t usually go through, but with the help of the host program some of the burden was lifted off my back and even my sisters. When my mom passed away this January we were devastated and had no clue what we're going do but with the help of the school community, our church community and the host program we were able to bounce back from a dreadful situation. I have been saving up the host money ever since the beginning of the year and when my mom passed away it was nice to know that I had that money to fall back on. With that money I was able to help my sister give first and last month's rent at our new place and help her out with buying new furniture. I’m am very grateful for the host program and once again would like to say thank you because that money helped us a lot in a time of need.”

"Receiving the Host Program award was one of the best things to have happened to me. I was going through a really hard time in my life. It made life so much more easier for me and my family. I was able to provide for myself and get things I wanted. For example I was able to buy myself clothes, makeup, treating myself to food, etc. I never thought anything like this would ever happen to me. I felt as if there was a black cloud over my head, but being chosen for this award in itself gives me so much hope. It made me feel recognized for my accomplishments and that's a feeling I don't think I've ever felt before. Thank you for choosing me."

"When I was first chosen for this program, I just couldn’t believe that after having gone through some of the things I have in my life, all of a sudden for someone to do this for me was hard to comprehend. This year has been rough. I lived with my mom and step-dad then for three months I lived on my own. The money I received has helped me to stay afloat. It has helped provide a safety net for food or supplies when needed. When the first of every month came around, I felt relieved to know that there was something there for me to live off of. It is hard enough to have a rough time outside of school but it is important for me to try to keep up my grades. I hope that his donors continue to support Mr. Lussier. I would like him to know that as soon as I can, I would like to support the program as well.”

"The HOST Program has been an amazing help to me this semester during my often difficult times of need and even when things are looking better but need a little boost. Between keeping me from being stranded or hungry to helping pay rent when necessary, I do not know what I would do without this extra help. If it were not for the help of the HOST program, I do not know where I would be and I would like to offer my thanks.”

"I want to express my sincere gratitude for the sponsorship you offered me. It has helped me in various ways especially in obtaining a laptop which made a great difference for my studies, rather than going to the library for the use of a computer. My 12-year old brother has a terminal disease. He requires constant supervision which I usually assist my mother with. I am happy that I have the laptop so I can do my school assignments at home while watching my brother when my mother is busy. Currently my family is in a financial struggle, so this sponsorship has helped greatly with buying groceries and paying for my graduation fees. I would like to thank you again for giving me such a great opportunity.”

"When I was told that I was awarded the HOST award, I was shocked. I've never been recognized for my marks. I would like to thank whoever is involved in sponsoring this program. So far it has helped me a lot. I have bought myself a scarf, mittens, and hat. I buy hot lunches every day for myself with my money. I remember missing school because I wouldn't have a lunch. Now I'm able to attend every day. I love school. My plan was to purchase myself a winter coat/winter boots with my December funds. Again I thank you with all my heart."

"Je vous remercie pour l`argent que vous m`avez donné. Ça m`a vraiment aidé et ma famille aussi. Ça m`a aidé à acheter des vêtements et de la nourriture et des médicaments pour ma sœur. Je me sentais utile pour ma famille. Les nouveaux vêtements me font sentir comme les autres jeunes autour de moi. (Translation) I want to thank you for the money that you have given me. It has really helped and my family. It has helped me buy clothes, food and medication for my sister. The new clothes make me feel like the other kids around me."

"As this is the end of the year, I want to take the time to tell you how grateful I am for the Host Program this school year. It has been a huge help for me and made it a lot easier on my entire family to have that financial aid. The past few months, the money has gone into paying for my school transportation as well as affording medication that would otherwise be too expensive on my mother to afford for me. With such uses, this help has allowed my family to rest a bit easier as we have always struggled to afford transportation and medication since both my mother and I are both on mandatory medications for proper day to day function. Over the year, the Host Program has helped both me and my family begin to thrive and the help it has given me has contributed to giving me a higher level of confidence to succeed in my education and complete my final year, and I feel more than ready to move on to the next level into college or university.”

"Once again, I'd like to thank you for this amazing opportunity to participate in the Host Program. Over the course of the last 10 months, the Host Program has helped me in lots of ways, by being able to support my family better with groceries, rent, and living essentials. By not worrying about my financial needs, my mom has been able to save money herself and move out of our apartment. The Host Program along with working two jobs has helped me support my little brother with his school needs such as field trips, school supplies, and lunches. I will always remember my grade 11 year as one of the better ones due to The Host Program. Being able to be a part of such an amazing opportunity has made me shine and I want to pay it forward back into the community to help others in need."

"I greatly thank you for the support you have given me in my last high school year. I can safely say that without the donations I had received, I would not have been able to get to school, go to prom, or afford any extracurricular events outside of school. With the money, I was able to enjoy my final year and not worry if I'll be able to get to school that day since I could afford a bus pass. Also, I was able to work less and that extra time allowed me to study and maintain my scholarship. Before this program came along, I worked 5 days a week and still had trouble keeping up with payments I owed. But, with the boost I received, I was able to pay what I needed to. I am extremely grateful for the support you have given me. Thank you so much and I hope you can even reach out to more students just like me in the future years because it really does help."

"Thank you so much for this grand opportunity. I have never been one of the lucky ones that get picked for amazing things or someone that stands out from the rest. So when I was called to meet the people from the HOST Program, I was truly surprised. My family and I have been going through a lot this year, and it felt really good to be chosen for something like the HOST Program. This program has not only helped me financially, but also mentally. Before being chosen for the HOST, I was just about ready to give up in school. I was not in a good place, and felt as if nobody cared about what I did. Now, I feel like someone does care about me and my future. It makes me want to do the best I can in school to be successful and be able to give back, just like this program is doing for me. Some of the money being given to me by this program went into hot lunches and bus tickets. Another part was used for Christmas presents for my family. But the majority of the money being given to me by this program will be going to my University savings. I can't thank the HOST Program enough for all the help they have provided for me and my family. I feel so lucky to have been chosen, and I will never forget this."

"There are so many things that could have turned out differently for me in my senior year. I am finally finished my high school career and I feel more confident and prepared for the next step of my life. My reasoning is because I was blessed with many great opportunities that only happened because of this program. I spent some of my money on professional and interview appropriate clothes, and through this I was able to get a summer job. I was also able to go to my school prom and it blew me away how expensive everything could be. The rides, the dresses, the ticket cost, etc. With the help of the Host Program I was able to attend prom and enjoy a fun night with my friends. Normally these things are not an option for me. In the end, I was able to feel normal at my school among my peers. I was able to be a part of school events that required you to spend money. I felt like I could focus on my education because the distraction of finding a way to pay for things was solved. I am eternally grateful for being a part of this program and the personal benefits they have granted me."

"I am writing to you to inform you on my experience with your HOST program. When I first got introduced to this program I was very shocked and confused on why you guys first chose me. Thank you for making me feel like I was normal girl for the first time."

"At the beginning of this school year, I was pleased to learn that I was to receive an award from the HOST Program. At the time, I didn’t realize the positive impact it would have both academically and personally. I suffer from an anxiety disorder. As the child of a disabled, single parent in a low-income family, the worries of home have often affected that anxiety and caused poor attendance. Although my marks are good, I was able to achieve only 1 to 2 credits each year. This year, I expect to receive at least 6 credits by the end of the school year. The $100 I received monthly from the program helped with school supplies and clothing. It has been used to buy food and other necessities for my family. The money helped to insure our car so I can drive, which has been very useful during times when my mother is too sick to drive. Just knowing that there was money coming in each month to fall back on helped to ease my anxiety and made it much easier to focus on school. The HOST Program is a great program that can make a huge difference in a student’s life. It definitely made a difference in mine. Thank you for making that possible."

"Receiving the “Help Our Students Program” award has helped me in so many ways that just proves your program makes a difference in young people’s lives. I didn’t think something this nice could happen to me. By winning this award, I gained confidence and hope when thinking of school and in life in general. Thanks to the award I was able to get myself some simple school supplies like binders, pens and paper. I bought lunches for school, and some warm clothes for winter. I helped my mom pay for some of my phone bill. I used it for my mother’s birthday present and flowers. Lastly I was able to get the little things I need on a regular basis. Around the time I received the award, I was just begging the universe for some help to get through the year, and then shortly after I attended school and I met you there to give me the award. I was so happy I couldn’t believe it. It gave/gives me some hope and strength to earn my credits this year. Therefore, this award has impacted my life in a way I’ll never forget and will always be thankful for. Thank you for taking a chance with me and thank you for choosing me for this award, truly grateful.”

"I wanted to thank you for giving me the chance to make my family’s life better. The $100 dollars a month that I have been given has helped my family a lot. Since my dad lost his job in December I have been spending about $50 a month on food for the house. This winter my mom couldn’t afford to buy me winter boots so I used the money I get each month to get myself the boots I needed. When I first started getting money each month I bought myself a pair of shoes that I really needed. It takes a lot of stress off of me knowing that I have an extra $100 dollars a month that I can spend on whatever I need at that given time. My life has been a lot easier since I started getting this money back in September.”

"I have been through a life of paying bills with the little money l get. I never had spare money to spend on luxury things or even have money to save. When l started receiving the Host Program, it was a great relief in my life. I had never had any extra money in the middle of the month. The Host program has really helped me with paying my phone bill and still having cash to spare in between the month. My family as well has benefited from me having to receive money from this program as I live with my siblings without any parents and we try to bring money together to buy groceries and necessities that we all need. I used to contribute very little but now with the Host Program money, my contribution was a little higher than normal which has been great on my family’s side. Receiving the Host Program money has opened my heart to working hard to get enough to help others who are struggling as l realized how much it has helped me and the great impact it has had on my life. I have learnt how to save and make the little remaining last for a long time and working harder to also be able to help other people as l have learnt that we all need a little help. I am very grateful to have been lucky enough to receive help from this program."

"I would first like to start off by thanking you for helping me get through this year! I got chosen for your program by my guidance counsellor as she told me there was a special someone to come & visit me as I had no idea who it was. When I sat down with Richard & he explained what I was receiving, I was very surprised as I’ve been working really hard on my studies & I finally felt recognized for how well I was doing once I heard I was being rewarded. The scholarship money that has been given to me every month helped me in so many was such as paying for my phone bill, my groceries or when I was low on money for rent. I’ve been living on my own for 2 years now & receiving the $100/month made a huge impact on my life. I would really like to thank you guys for the support & what you guys are doing is really making a difference not only in my life but others as well! I finally feel less stressed about money & I am more focused on school! Thank you for helping me grow into the woman I am becoming."

"How has the $1000 changed my life? The $1000 has given me the safety net I desperately needed. Without it I probably would not still be in high school. Reason being I would just be too stressed out. Wanting to make money now and not wanting to think about the future. This Is also helping me with moving out starting life on my own. I am forced to move out coming this summer and I have known this for a while. I have made money doing roofing and other odd jobs to cover the cost of moving out on my own however not enough to move out with a car. I very much need a car as I have a dream of starting an apprenticeship in the trades and wish to become a volunteer firefighter. At the moment I am signed up for an electrical apprenticeship for the summer. Since I do not have anyone paying for things I need besides food, the $1000 really helps me reach my goal of getting on the road and for that I am forever grateful. To anyone who is thinking about donating to this program please do. Your donations are not going to be wasted. They really help ordinary people grow out of not the best situations into better ones. This has not only helped me get out of my situation but also mentally I am humbled. I grew up in a situation that made me think most people are not very virtuous and that in the end there is no sense in helping others because it will only get taken advantage of. However I was so wrong and thanks to large part of this donation I do not feel so alone in the world knowing that even strangers will help you out if you are worth it."

"The Help Our Students Program provided me with the assistance I needed to finish my grade 12 year. Grade 12 is quite an expensive year, and even with a part-time job, I was struggling to get food and accessories. With support from the program, I was able to get lunch every day, pay for a few activities at school, and not worry about money so much. This helped improve my grades and my overall morale. The joy of knowing that every month I'd receive some financial help took away a lot of stress and made my year more bearable. The program played a crucial role in my grade 12 year. Without it, I would have had to ask for more hours at work, and with my schedule already being packed, it would have been very stressful and would have had a very bad impact on my grades. I am honored to have been one of the recipients of this program, and I am extremely grateful to Mr. Lussier for helping me out throughout this year.”

"At the beginning of my grade 12 year I moved out of my mom's house with my older brothers. It wasn't safe or good for my well-being to have stayed there. My older brothers pay the apartment bills because I work part time. Other than that I pay for everything myself; my phone bill, my groceries, clothes. I help my brothers when they don't have money as well. Quite literally everything I need comes out of my own pocket. The biggest dent each month was my bus pass, my dad had given me his and every month I paid the monthly pass of $119.50. This had been particularly hard for me, I'm not one to pity myself however, I felt quite misfortunate that I had to pay over $100 each month just to get myself to school and back. I would see all of my friends coming to school for free and it would put things back into perspective that this was my reality. When my guidance councillor told me I had been granted with this program I had felt a wave of relief come over me. It felt like I was being taken care of by the universe, and the wonderful people in it. I was very pleased when she explained the program to me because I realised that there are people out there who care for us struggling students. We don't go unnoticed and there are people there who want to help us succeed. It also made me pleased to know that other students out there were receiving this program as well and that they are being looked out for. It truly warms my heart that this program exists and I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for being a light in our lives and looking out for us. This monthly payment has made me feel cared for, acknowledged, and all around allowed me to feel like a slightly more normal student.”

"I’d like to start off by saying I was very honoured when I found out I was chosen for the HOST program. The money I have received has helped both me and my family on multiple occasions. I was able to buy myself winter boots so I did not have to wear running shoes all winter because my family did not have enough room in their pay cheques. The money also helped me buy things when I was out with friends so I did not feel embarrassed that my family could not give me any money. With the money I was also able to give my parents some when they needed help to make ends meet and pay bills. Most importantly it helped me buy lunch at school on many occasions so I did not starve. Lastly I would like to thank the president of HOST for creating the program. But, also the people and families who give money to the program because without them I would not have been able to do some of the things I have done. This program has helped me realize that there are people out there that realize some families are struggling financially and are willing to help them out."

"I got granted the host program; the program really helped me. I play competitive basketball and my family could no longer afford it but thanks to this amazing program I got to play basketball this year and I got to get a scholarship because I got recognized by a college. I would have never had this opportunity without this program. I am so thankful. With this money I can now enjoy the rest of my life playing basketball and go into my program. Other students in my position would be so grateful for this opportunity that I was granted. Now I am going to go to school out of town and pursue my basketball dreams and try as hard as I can to succeed in my studies.”

"Today, I can proudly say that this program has tremendously impacted my life for the last year of my high school experience. Before the sponsorship, I used to go to school and have a part time job after. This was really tiresome for me and was getting exhausting as time went on. It had even affected my academic grades and lowered my mark. I used to get home late, tired and stressed. I never really had time for my life outside school or work. I was always focused on those things and it was giving me anxiety and almost led to a serious depression. Since I was an immigrant in Canada, my parents never had well-paying jobs so they found it hard to provide for the family hence I had to help by getting a part time job to reduce on the expenses spent on me. However, this sad story flipped when I started receiving this help. Thanks to Mr. Richard Lussier, I was able not only to overcome my financial issues but also have a happy life. I was able to have time for other activities and create time for my family too. My tendency of getting anxious dropped and I got better at managing my time for school. My grades got better and my life just changed. I really thank God for bringing a generous person like you into my life. What you did for me and my family will always be remembered and appreciated. All I can say is God bless you and when I grow up I want to help people just like you helped me."
