Student Letters
There are common themes that echo across the letters submitted by HOST recipients that show the impact of the HOST award. It is important to note that each student has a personal story of challenges and hardship; strength and hope.
Some of these recurring themes are:
-
The chance to focus on studies due to reduced financial stress and reduced work hours
-
The ability to pay for basic necessities and to help family members
-
The ability to pay for bus passes, school supplies, field trips, graduation costs
-
Hope, confidence and improved mental health
-
The feeling of being seen and recognized as hard working; motivation to continue to work hard
-
Financial literacy
-
Gratitude and a desire to pay it forward when financially able
-
A stepping stone for post graduate studies; financial assistance to pay for applications to colleges and universities
Here are some excerpts and below full letters. The letters are edited to remove any reference that might identify the student.
Excerpts from Students' Letters
“Your money helped me put clean clothes on my body, helped me put food on the table, and helped me get from place to place.”
"I’ve been blessed to be able to use this money for small things like groceries for the house and big things like a new winter coat for my sister.”
"I was able to buy myself winter boots so I did not have to wear running shoes all winter because my family did not have enough room in their pay cheques”.
“Growing up, I was always the kid with no money to go on field trips, or the grad trips or being able to afford food and other things."
